Pratapgarh Family Performs Symbolic Last Rites Of Living Woman Over Inter-Caste Relationship

In Pratapgarh’s Jethwara police station area, the family of a living young woman carried out her symbolic last rites after she remained firm on living with a young man of another caste against their wishes.

According to the information available, the family considered the young woman dead, took out a funeral procession for her in the village, placed her photograph on a pyre and burnt an effigy. The act was carried out symbolically, even though the young woman is alive.

It is being said that the young woman was adamant about staying with the man of her choice, despite opposition from her family. This led to a dispute between the family and the young woman. Amid discussions in society and anger within the family, the relatives decided to end their relationship with her.

Police later recovered the young woman safely. After this, the young woman described herself as an adult and said she wanted to choose her life partner as per her own wishes and live with the young man.

Following this stand taken by the young woman, her family performed the symbolic funeral. Relatives are now said to be preparing for the daughter’s terahvi ritual as well.

The incident has become a matter of discussion in the village. In the case, police are taking further action on the basis of the young woman’s statement and the legal position.
