Police bust major gambling ring in Kanpur Dehat, arrest six with Rs 17,890 seized

Police in Kanpur Dehat district have arrested six persons for gambling in a major crackdown under an ongoing special drive against criminal activities in the region. The arrests were made by the Rura police station team following a tip-off from an informer.

The incident took place on 10 September 2026 at around 5:20 pm when the Rura police team conducted a raid at an empty plot belonging to Chhote Lal in Ambedkar Nagar locality based on precise information received from the informer. Six persons were caught red-handed while placing bets on playing cards at the spot and were taken into custody.

The arrested accused have been identified as Annsu son of Rajkumar, a resident of Ward No. 2, Ambedkar Nagar under Rura police station jurisdiction; Aashif son of Mohammad Sadiq, resident of Sindhi Bhatta, Ramnagar, Rura; Abhishek Kumar son of Ramshankar, resident of Kari Karwari Premadevi, Rura; Lalji son of Natthu, resident of village Ambarpur, Rura; Mayank son of Santosh, resident of village Jinai Banipara, Rura; and Santosh alias Kallu son of Ramratan, resident of Ganeshganj locality, Rura.

Police have recovered several items from the possession of the accused and from the spot. A total cash amount of Rs 17,890 was seized, which includes Rs 2,350 from the gambling pool and Rs 15,540 recovered during personal search of the accused. Also recovered were 52 playing cards, one gamchha used as the gambling mat, and four mobile phones.

Based on the arrests and recoveries, a case bearing crime number 280/2026 has been registered at Rura police station under Section 13 of the Public Gambling Act 1867. Police are proceeding with further legal action against the accused as per rules and regulations.

The successful operation was carried out by a police team that included Chowki Prabhari Kasba Rura Sub-Inspector Vinod Kumar, Constable Suresh Kumar (114), Constable Krishna Chaudhary (350), Constable Nitin Kumar (733) and Constable Rajeev Kumar (803).

The arrests were made as part of a special campaign being run across the district for prevention of criminal incidents and to conduct raids and arrests of offenders. The Rura police team achieved this success in its enforcement drive against illegal gambling activities in the area.
