Patanjali seeks 50 crore damages from ex-BJP MP over fake ghee allegations

Former Bharatiya Janata Party member of parliament Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh from Kaiserganj in Bahraich has found himself entangled in a fresh legal trouble. Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Foods Limited has filed a defamation lawsuit against him seeking damages of 50 crore rupees.

In 2022, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had publicly called Patanjali ghee fake from a public platform and appealed to people to rear cows or buffaloes at home. Even at that time, a dispute had surfaced between Brij Bhushan Singh and Baba Ramdev over the matter. The hearing of this case is underway in the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

During the hearing, Patanjali's lawyer Vikram Malviya argued that the former parliamentarian's statement has caused damage to the company's brand image. The share price was impacted and the company had to suffer financial losses, he told the court.

After the trial stage, the matter reached the High Court. During the hearing, notices have been issued to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The next hearing in this case is now scheduled for 18 September.

The defamation suit centers on the former BJP lawmaker's public remarks about the edibility and authenticity of Patanjali's ghee products, which the company alleges harmed its commercial reputation and market standing.
