Olectra Says It Has Deployed 4,000 Electric Buses Across India

Olectra Greentech Limited said on July 30 that it had become the first company in India to deploy 4,000 electric buses on the country's roads. The company made the announcement during a ceremony in Himachal Pradesh, where its 4,000th electric bus was symbolically handed over to the state government.

297 buses flagged off for HRTC

The ceremony also marked the flag-off of 297 Olectra electric buses inducted into the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) fleet. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri were present for the handover, along with senior government, HRTC and Olectra officials.

According to the company's press release, the buses will add to Olectra's electric-bus operations across several states and cities. Olectra said its buses are being used for public transport and have carried millions of passengers while offering lower operating costs and environmental benefits. These claims were made by the company in the release issued from Hyderabad and Shimla.

Fleet records more than 730 million green kilometres

Olectra said its fleet of 4,000 electric buses has collectively covered more than 730 million green kilometres. The company also claimed that the distance has helped prevent over 6.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. The figures are company-provided and were not independently verified by NewsDarpan.

Mahesh Babu, Managing Director of Olectra Greentech, said the 4,000-bus milestone reflected the confidence that public transport undertakings had placed in electric mobility. He said the company would continue working on electric transport solutions through innovation, scale and technology.

Company cites order book of over 8,500 vehicles

Olectra, which is part of the MEIL Group, said it manufactures pure electric buses and electric tippers. The company said it has an order book exceeding 8,500 vehicles and designs and deploys electric mobility solutions for urban and intercity public transport. The press release did not provide a route-wise breakup of the 4,000 buses or details of the operating states.

The HRTC handover and the induction of 297 buses mark the latest publicly announced addition to the company's electric mobility operations in Himachal Pradesh. The broader 4,000-bus figure and the emissions estimate remain based on information provided by Olectra in its press release.
