MYSURU: The Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Mysuru faced controversy after eight patients in its ICU died within a 24-hour period, sparking allegations of <a href="/en/article/centre-reviews-mbbs-internship-stipend-hike-after-four-years" class="nd-inline-link">medical</a> negligence and staff shortages. A viral social media post claimed that 12 patients had died due to these issues, but hospital authorities refuted the claims.

In an official statement on Wednesday, the hospital clarified that eight inpatients had passed away between Monday midnight and Tuesday midnight. All of them were reportedly undergoing treatment for serious cardiac conditions.

The deceased included two individuals over the age of 80, one aged 70, four between 55 and 64 years, and one aged 43. Hospital director Dr. B. Dinesha reviewed the records and dismissed allegations that the deaths were caused by staff shortages or negligence. He explained that the patients had been under treatment for two to three days and were suffering from severe complications and multiple comorbidities.

While acknowledging that the number of deaths was unusual, Dr. Dinesha emphasized that the patients' medical conditions were consistent with the hospital's case profile. He also addressed complaints in the viral video about alleged inadequate facilities, asserting that the hospital has sufficient staff, with only a 5% staffing gap.

The hospital continues to deny any lapses in care, maintaining that the deaths were due to the critical nature of the patients' conditions.
