Man convicted of killing two cops inside police van gets life sentence

A district court in Chandausi has convicted and sentenced Dharampal to life imprisonment in the high-profile 2019 Sambhal case in which two policemen were murdered while in custody inside a police prisoner transport van.

The district court in Chandausi, Sambhal, delivered the major verdict in the widely discussed 2019 constable murder case. The court found Dharampal guilty of killing two constables and sentenced him to life imprisonment. In addition to the life term, the court imposed a fine of 1 lakh 64 thousand rupees on Dharampal.

The incident had caused widespread alarm in 2019 when two constables were murdered inside a police prisoner van and a rifle was looted from them. According to police, Dharampal was arrested in connection with this case. Two other accused in the case, Kamal and Shakeel, were killed in separate police encounters.

The district court in Chandausi, Sambhal, has pronounced this verdict in the approximately seven-year-old case, bringing closure to one of the most sensational crimes in the region involving the killing of police personnel in custody.
