Lionel Messi's 70-Foot Statue Removed in Kolkata Over Safety Concerns

A 70-foot statue of football legend Lionel Messi, installed in Kolkata's Lake Town area, has been removed by authorities citing safety concerns. The statue, inaugurated six months ago by Messi himself during his visit to India, reportedly showed signs of instability during recent strong winds. Local residents had raised complaints about the statue swaying in adverse weather conditions.

Following these complaints, the Public Works Department (PWD) conducted an inspection and identified technical flaws in the foundation bolts of the statue. The contractor warned that the structure was no longer safe and could collapse. Acting promptly, the administration decided to dismantle the statue. Using a hydraulic crane, PWD officials carefully removed the statue and transported it to a secure location. Officials confirmed that the statue sustained no damage during the removal process.

The statue, made of iron and fiber, was completed in just 40 days at an estimated cost of ₹10 crore. It remains under PWD's supervision while the state government deliberates on its future placement. Speculations suggest it could be reinstalled at Rabindra Sarobar or Eco Park, though no official decision has been announced yet.

The project was initiated under the leadership of former West Bengal minister Sujit Bose. However, Bose is currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a municipal recruitment scam.

The statue's removal has sparked discussions about its future, with many awaiting clarity on its next location.
