A Korean cultural evening in Hyderabad, with a distinctly Telangana touch

Korea Culture Day 2026 brought Korean and Telangana traditions together at Shilpakala Vedika in Hyderabad on Sunday through music, dance, martial arts and cultural exchange.

The programme moved between the precision of Korean performances and the vigorous rhythms of Telangana’s traditional arts, creating a shared cultural evening on one stage.

Korean culture draws visitors through the afternoon

The event began taking shape from the afternoon, when stalls selling Korean products drew curious visitors.

Crowds gathered around the stalls to explore a slice of Korean culture before the main programme began inside the auditorium.

As the evening approached, the focus shifted towards the auditorium, where hundreds of people began assembling from 5 p.m. to watch the performances lined up for the occasion.

The programme began around 5.30 p.m.

The opening address was delivered by Lee Seong-ho, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to India, who welcomed the audience to Hyderabad and spoke about the cultural ties the event sought to strengthen.

Diwali and Chuseok as shared traditions

Mr. Lee drew a connection between Diwali, India’s festival of lights, and Chuseok, Korea’s harvest festival.

He said the two celebrations reflected shared values of family, togetherness, gratitude and hope for the future.

Although the traditions themselves may differ, Mr. Lee said, the emotions they evoke are remarkably similar.

He added that cultural exchanges help people discover how much they have in common.

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka also addressed the gathering and spoke about Korea’s transformation into a global economic and cultural force.

He noted that Korean music, cinema and television had found audiences across the world.

According to Mr. Vikramarka, Korea’s influence showed that a country’s reach extends beyond its economic and military strength to the power of its cultural imagination.

He also highlighted the historical connections between India and Korea, along with Hyderabad’s long-standing identity as a meeting point of cultures, languages and traditions.

“Telangana’s festivals, arts and heritage were an important part of its identity as a state looking towards a globally connected future,” he added.

Cultural exchange linked to economic cooperation

Mr. Vikramarka also pointed to opportunities for closer cooperation between Telangana and Korean enterprises.

The areas he mentioned included electronics, electric vehicles, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and emerging technologies.

That emphasis placed the performances within a wider conversation about the relationship between Telangana and Korea, while keeping cultural exchange at the centre of the evening.

Martial arts and Telangana traditions share the stage

The Daekyung Taekwondo Demonstration was among the evening’s most energetic acts.

The performers combined agility, strength and precision in a series of martial arts displays.

They broke tiles and executed stunts that drew loud cheers from the crowd.

Each demonstration was met with excitement, turning the auditorium into a space filled with applause and animated reactions.

The programme then shifted to the vigorous rhythms of Telangana’s Perini Shiva Tandavam.

The traditional dance is known for its powerful movements and historical association with warriors.

Its presentation brought a distinctly local flavour to the cultural evening.

The Telangana Dappulu performance followed, filling the programme with the forceful beats of traditional drums.

The change from Korean martial arts to Telangana dance and percussion gave the showcase its defining character, with the evening moving between the traditions of the two countries.

Korean music closes the programme

The audience was then introduced to Korean traditional performance through Eolssigu.

A violin duo added another musical dimension to the evening.

The Atti Classic Vocal Crossover Performance further broadened the programme’s musical range.

An instrumental performance by a Korean band followed and brought the cultural showcase to a close.
