Kanpur Dehat police constable jumps from roof after sister's case neglect claims

A police constable stationed at the police lines in Kanpur Dehat jumped from the roof of the police office on Tuesday, triggering panic among officers at the scene. The constable, identified as Ankit Deshwal, was rushed to the trauma center at the medical college around three kilometers away in an e-rickshaw, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Medical authorities report fractures to one arm and one leg, and the injured constable has undergone X-ray and CT scan examinations.

Roughly 16 hours before the incident, Ankit had posted on social media platform X, writing, "You people are forcing me to commit suicide, don't officers deliver justice?" In his post, he had tagged several police officials including the Kanpur Dehat police handle. Ankit, a resident of Firozabad, has been alleging that police failed to take effective action after his sister went missing several years ago. He also claims that a fixed deposit of around one lakh rupees in her name was withdrawn. An FIR was registered in Firozabad, but Ankit repeatedly questioned police work on social media, which led to him being placed on line duty multiple times.

The case is currently pending in the Firozabad district court. According to reports, Ankit had been issued a notice by the office of Sadar CO Sanjay Singh on court orders to record his statement, though officials remain unclear whether he visited the police office in connection with that notice or for some other reason. ASP Kanpur Dehat, Alok Prasad, stated that Ankit was leaning over the roof and fell down during that time. However, the constable's prior social media post has raised serious questions about the incident. The ASP revealed that Ankit had attempted suicide by hanging at the police lines a few days earlier as well, following which he had personally counseled him. Investigation into the rooftop incident is underway, and security has been heightened at the medical college where Ankit is being treated.
