A wanted cattle smuggling accused was injured in an encounter with the police and the SOG team in Gonda district’s Katra Bazar police station area, officials said. The accused, identified as Kavi Ullah, was wanted in several cases related to cattle smuggling.

According to the police version, Kavi Ullah was surrounded late in the evening during an operation. During the cordon, he allegedly opened fire. The police then fired in retaliation, and a bullet hit Kavi Ullah in his right leg. He was injured in the encounter and was immediately sent by the police to the district hospital, where his treatment is underway.

Two other associates of Kavi Ullah, identified as Samee and Suhel, were also arrested along with him. Police said the action was linked to complaints of cattle smuggling in the Katra area.

A case of cow smuggling had been registered against 6 people after the complaint, and 4 teams had been formed to make the arrests. On the instructions of SP Abhishek Jha, the police were on patrol. During this, based on information from an informer, the police launched a checking drive late at night.

Police said they then received information about the presence of cattle smugglers at the spot. When the police team carried out a cordon, the accused allegedly started firing. In the retaliatory action, Kavi Ullah was shot and injured in the police encounter. He was then rushed to the hospital by the police.

Police said a country-made pistol, cartridges, banned meat from the storage compartment of a bike, and an illegal knife were recovered from the possession of the injured accused. The police also said that several criminal cases are registered against him in Gonda district’s Katra Bazar and Karnalganj Kotwali areas.

According to officials, the police had been looking for Kavi Ullah for a long time. He was caught today during checking after the encounter.

Additional Superintendent of Police Radheshyam said the accused was arrested in the encounter. He said legal action is being taken and the accused is being sent to jail.
