Heavy winds cause flight disruptions at Chennai airport

Heavy winds and sudden rains disrupted flight operations at Chennai airport on Thursday, causing delays and diversions. Two Chennai-bound flights were rerouted to nearby airports, while several others experienced delays in arrivals and departures.

IndiGo’s ATR flight from Salem, carrying around 70 passengers, was unable to land in Chennai due to strong winds. The flight, which departed at 3:34 PM, was diverted to Tirupati and landed safely there at 5:30 PM. Similarly, an IndiGo flight from Kolkata, scheduled to land in Chennai at 5:15 PM, had to abort its landing and was redirected to Trichy, where it touched down at 5:45 PM.

In addition to these diversions, flights arriving in Chennai from Indore, Lucknow, and Hyderabad were forced to hover in the air due to congestion caused by the weather. This led to delays in their landing schedules. Outbound flights from Chennai to cities like Ranchi, Mysore, Goa, and Kolkata were also delayed by up to two hours.

The sudden weather change caused significant inconvenience to passengers, with many facing extended travel times and altered plans. Airport authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have advised passengers to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules.

Such disruptions highlight the challenges posed by unpredictable weather conditions, especially during the monsoon season, which often impacts air travel in the region. Passengers are urged to stay informed and plan accordingly during this period.
