Hakki Pikki members stranded in Mozambique to return to India Friday

Three members of the Hakki Pikki tribal community from Shivamogga, Karnataka, who were stranded in Mozambique after losing their travel documents, are set to return to India on Friday. The High Commission of India in Mozambique stepped in to assist Milan Kumar, Kavya, and Gambhir, ensuring their safe return, confirmed R. Punith Kumar, State president of the Hakki Pikki Budakattu Sanghatane.

The trio, residents of the Hakki Pikki Camp near Shivamogga, had traveled to Mozambique to sell medicinal plant extracts. However, their plans took a turn when they sought to extend their visas. They hired a local agent for assistance, but the agent absconded with their passports and other documents, leaving them stranded. Despite repeated attempts to contact the agent, they received no response.

Speaking to The Hindu, Punith Kumar shared that the High Commission was alerted to the situation and acted swiftly. “The officials tracked down the agent and recovered the stolen documents. They also helped in arranging flight tickets for their return journey. The group will leave Nampula on Friday,” he said. He expressed gratitude to the High Commission for their timely intervention.

The incident highlights the risks faced by members of tribal communities venturing abroad for trade and livelihood. The Hakki Pikki community, known for their traditional knowledge of medicinal plants, often travels internationally to sell their products. While this provides economic opportunities, such episodes underscore the importance of vigilance and proper documentation when dealing with agents in foreign countries.

The prompt action by Indian officials has brought relief to the stranded individuals and their families back home. Their safe return is expected to conclude a stressful ordeal and serve as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding travel documents while abroad.
