Habbey Teron named BJP candidate for Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker

BJP MLA Habbey Teron has been named the party's candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of the Assam assembly Legislative Assembly. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on Thursday, June 18, 2026, ahead of the upcoming Budget session of the Assembly, which begins on July 6.

Dr. Teron, a medical professional by training, represents the Amri (ST) Hills constituency in West Karbi Anglong district. Notably, he is the first elected representative from the newly created Amri constituency. His nomination is seen as a step towards amplifying the voices of tribal communities in the legislative process.

Chief Minister Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his support for Teron, stating, "Dr. Habbey Teron represents the aspirations of our tribal communities and will further strengthen the voice of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in the legislative process. I extend my best wishes to Dr. Teron."

The BJP leads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam, having secured 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly during the 2026 elections. The NDA, which includes alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front, returned to power for a third consecutive term with a total of 102 seats. Earlier, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, a senior BJP leader, was elected Speaker during the first session of the 16th Assembly in May.

Dr. Teron's nomination comes at a crucial time as the Assembly prepares for the Budget session, where key legislative discussions are expected. His potential election as Deputy Speaker is likely to further consolidate the BJP's influence in the state legislature while giving greater representation to tribal regions like Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
