Greenfield Highway Land Acquisition Sparks Anger Among Farmers

Farmers in Sambhal district have expressed strong anger over land acquisition for the proposed Green Field Highway, described as the Moradabad via Aligarh route. An emergency panchayat of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Apolitical) Rakesh Tikait was organised today at the market in village Khirni over the issue.

The meeting was attended prominently by the organisation’s woman district president Gayatri Yadav. Several office-bearers of the organisation were also present, along with a large number of workers and farmers.

The farmers alleged that the administration is acquiring fertile land located along the side of the old highway from Khirni to Lakhanpur. According to the farmers, these lands are the only source of their livelihood. They said that acquisition without proper compensation and consent will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

At the panchayat, farmers said the government is taking away farmers’ land in the name of development. They claimed this would leave hundreds of families unemployed. The farmers announced that they would oppose the acquisition in a united manner.

Office-bearers present at the meeting said that if the farmers’ demands are not heard, the agitation will be intensified further. The panchayat concluded with slogans of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Samvidhan.”

The protest was centred on the land acquisition linked to the proposed Green Field Highway project in Sambhal, with farmers making it clear that they want their concerns over compensation, consent and livelihood to be addressed before any acquisition moves ahead.
