Former Samajwadi Party MLC sentenced to life in Panchmukhi Temple murder case

A district and sessions court in Auraiya has sentenced 10 people to life imprisonment in the Panchmukhi Temple double murder case, including former Samajwadi Party MLC Kamlesh Pathak. The court also imposed a fine of 50,000 rupees on each of the convicts. The verdict was delivered today after a trial that lasted six years and five months.

The case dates back to 15 March 2020, when advocate Manjul Chaubey and his cousin Sudha Chaubey were murdered inside the Panchmukhi Temple premises. The brutal killings had shocked the local community and attracted significant attention due to the political connections of the accused. Kamlesh Pathak, who was a member of the legislative council representing the Samajwadi Party at the time, emerged as the prime accused in the case.

The lengthy trial saw more than 900 hearings before the court finally pronounced its judgment. Prosecutors presented testimony from 72 witnesses to establish the guilt of the accused. The court examined extensive evidence and witness statements before arriving at the conviction. All 10 accused were found guilty of the double murder and sentenced to life imprisonment under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The case had been closely watched given the involvement of a sitting MLC when the murders took place. The conviction of Kamlesh Pathak marks a significant development in a case that has dragged on for over six years. The families of the victims had been seeking justice since the 2020 incident, and today's verdict brings some closure to the long legal battle.
