Delhi Police raid on village chief's husband yields 7 pistols, family demands impartial inquiry

Delhi Police conducted a raid at the home of a village chief in Aligarh and seized a cache of illegal weapons. The police team raided the residence of Gufran Mewati, husband of the chief of Talspur village. Police claim that 7 pistols and 20 cartridges were recovered from the house. The chief's family has questioned the police action and demanded an impartial inquiry into the recovery.

Irfan, a member of the chief's family, alleged that a Delhi Police team suddenly reached their home late on Thursday night. The family had no prior information about the action. According to Irfan, policemen climbed onto the roof of the house using a ladder. He says that usually no one goes to the roof.

The family alleges that police claimed to have recovered new pistols from the roof, whereas there were no weapons there earlier. After reaching the roof, policemen showed the weapons, took their photographs and completed paperwork on the spot. According to the family, after the action they were brought to Rorawer police station. They were given a notice there and asked to come to Delhi on 5 September. The chief's side alleges that a person who came with the Delhi Police was introducing himself as an acquaintance of the family, but the family and village people could not recognize him.

As news of the raid spread, a crowd of people gathered in the village. Discussions among villagers also began regarding the action.

Meanwhile, Rorawer police station in-charge Ravi Chandrawal said that Delhi Police had arrested a youth. During interrogation the youth told police that he had purchased weapons from the village chief of Talspur. Based on this information, Delhi Police raided the chief's house. According to the station in-charge, during the raid 7 pistols and 20 cartridges were recovered from the house. At present, police claims and the chief family's allegations stand opposed to each other. No official statement has come from Delhi Police regarding this action yet. The chief's side has demanded an impartial inquiry into the entire matter.
