Delhi Guest House Fire Claims 21 Lives, Raises Safety Concerns

A devastating fire broke out at a six-storey guest house in Delhi's Malviya Nagar, claiming 21 lives and leaving several others injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, starting in the ground-floor restaurant and quickly spreading to the upper floors. Many of the victims were foreign nationals from Nigeria and South Africa, who were staying at the guest house due to its proximity to a nearby hospital.

The guest house, identified as Flourish Inn, was operating with significant violations. It was originally licensed for six rooms but had illegally expanded to 25 rooms. Despite the lack of a fire No Objection Certificate (NoC), the establishment continued operations. Local residents and shopkeepers attempted to assist during the rescue efforts by placing mattresses on the ground to help those trapped on higher floors jump to safety. Firefighters arrived promptly and managed to rescue 45 people, but the tragedy left a lasting impact.

The incident has sparked outrage and raised critical questions about regulatory lapses. Political leaders expressed condolences and called for a thorough investigation. However, concerns remain about whether systemic issues will be addressed or if this will be another case where accountability is lost in bureaucratic processes.
