A commotion broke out in Hathras’s Khati Khana market on Thursday afternoon during a raid by a Central Goods and Services Tax (GST) team. The situation reportedly escalated into a heated confrontation and an alleged scuffle between the team and people on the trader’s side at the establishment of an iron trader.

Other traders from the market reached the spot after learning about the dispute, further intensifying the situation. Police and trade association officials also arrived and stepped in to try to bring the matter under control.

According to the information available, the Central GST team reached the establishment of iron trader Subodh Agrawal, also known as Dabbu Lohia, in Khati Khana market at around one o’clock in the afternoon. The team had arrived in three vehicles.

The trader alleged that the members of the team did not initially introduce themselves after reaching the establishment. He further alleged that the team members assaulted his employees and snatched their mobile phones.

Subodh Agrawal also alleged that he was involved in a physical altercation and that documents were seized from the establishment during the action. These allegations have been made by the trader and have not been independently established.

Dispute over search warrant

According to Subodh Agrawal, he asked the GST team to show the search warrant related to the action. He alleged that the team initially did not produce the warrant.

The trader further alleged that the warrant shown around half an hour later was not in the name of his firm. The issue led to a dispute between the two sides. As the argument escalated, other traders gathered at the spot and a commotion began in the market.

The arrival of more traders created tension in the area. The dispute reportedly reached the stage of a sharp confrontation and alleged physical scuffling between the team and the trader’s side.

Police, trade association officials intervene

After receiving information about the commotion and scuffle, local police and trade association officials reached the market. They spoke to both sides and tried to calm the situation.

During the incident, traders raised slogans and said they would not tolerate harassment in the name of official action. The situation was brought under control after some people intervened.

GST officials, however, rejected the allegations made by the traders. The officials denied the claims regarding the conduct of the team during the raid.

At present, the dispute between the two sides over the incident during the GST action and the allegations made by the trader remains at the centre of the matter. The trader has raised questions about the team’s introduction, the alleged assault, the seizure of documents and the search warrant.

The complete position will become clear only after the official response from the concerned parties and detailed information related to the action is made available.
