CJI Advocates Self-Reliant Villages as True Measure of Development

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, in an article published by Divya Bhaskar, shared his perspective on India's development journey. He questioned the prevailing notion that progress is synonymous with urbanization, industrial growth, and technological advancements. According to him, the true measure of development lies in how self-reliant and empowered villages become, rather than their transformation into urban centers.

The CJI pointed out that villages are the backbone of India's cultural and social identity. He stressed that while modern infrastructure such as roads, schools, healthcare, digital facilities, and employment opportunities are essential, it is equally important to safeguard the communal harmony, environmental balance, and human connections inherent in village life.

He expressed concern over the increasing migration of rural youth to cities, driven not only by economic factors but also by the perception that opportunities and dignified living are exclusive to urban areas. To counter this trend, he advocated for creating conditions where rural youth can thrive within their villages, experiencing dignity, opportunities, and progress without the need to relocate.

Highlighting the strength of villages, the CJI noted that their social fabric, rooted in community cooperation and mutual responsibility, provides stability to Indian society. He warned that excessive urbanization of villages could alter not just physical structures but also the nature of social relationships.

In conclusion, he called for a balanced approach to development, where villages retain their cultural essence while embracing modern amenities, ensuring inclusive and meaningful progress for India.
