The Bharatiya Kisan Union held a protest in Shamli over various problems faced by farmers and submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate. The memorandum was submitted under the leadership of Shanta Pradhan, western Uttar Pradesh vice-president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union.
Through the memorandum, the union demanded the immediate resolution of problems affecting farmers and the general public in the district. The union said that farmers and common people were facing several difficulties and urged the District Magistrate to take immediate cognisance of all the issues and ensure the necessary action.
One of the demands was for adequate lighting at the Baghra-Nauhatti bypass intersection. The union also demanded road construction on both sides of the intersection.
The issue of pending sugarcane payments at the Thanabhawan sugar factory was also raised. The union demanded that the outstanding payments owed to farmers be cleared before the factory starts operating. It said this would help farmers meet their essential needs on time.
The memorandum also sought a ban on the operation of overloaded vehicles, vehicles without number plates and jugaad vehicles on the roads of Shamli. The union said that such vehicles had been involved in several accidents and that people had also lost their lives in these incidents.
The union further objected to the action being taken by ARTO Shamli against diesel and petrol vehicles that are 10 to 15 years old. It demanded that this action be stopped with immediate effect.
The growing problem of stray animals was another issue highlighted by the farmers. They said stray animals were causing heavy damage to their crops. The union demanded that these animals be caught and sent to gaushalas.
The farmers also raised the issue of government committees not providing fertiliser on time. The union demanded that fertiliser be made available in sufficient quantities at these committees.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union urged the District Magistrate to address all the demands immediately and arrange for the required action on the problems concerning farmers and the general public.
