Why is BCCI Sending Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Parents on Overseas Tours? Secretary Devajit Saikia Explains

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken an unusual step by deciding to send the parents of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi along with him on the upcoming T20 tours of Ireland and England. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has shed light on the reasoning behind this decision.

Vaibhav, who is still a school student, has been selected for the Indian T20 team for the first time. He will be part of a seven-match series, starting with two matches against Ireland and five against England. The tour begins on June 26 with the first T20 match in Belfast.

Explaining the decision, Saikia emphasized the importance of ensuring a smooth transition for Vaibhav into the senior team, given his young age. "At 14-15 years old, it's rare to see players at the senior national level. The last time we had someone this young was decades ago, with Sachin Tendulkar making his Test debut at 16 years and six months," Saikia said.

The BCCI recognizes the challenges a young player like Vaibhav might face in an environment where all other players and team management are adults. "When school children go on trips, they are usually accompanied by a senior person. Similarly, we felt it would be appropriate for Vaibhav's parents to accompany him to make him feel comfortable and help him adapt to the senior team," Saikia explained.

This move is aimed at easing Vaibhav's integration into the team while addressing potential challenges that could arise due to his age and inexperience. "Having his parents around will make things much easier for him," Saikia added.

The decision highlights BCCI’s commitment to nurturing young talent while ensuring their well-being as they step into the demanding world of international cricket.
