Ballari mandates SVEEP activities in schools to boost voter literacy

Ballari district has taken a significant step to boost voter literacy by mandating SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) activities in all educational institutions. This directive applies to government, aided, and private schools, as well as PU colleges, degree colleges, and universities across the district. The move aims to strengthen electoral awareness, particularly among first-time voters and students nearing the age of 18.

Mohammad Haris Sumeer, the chairperson of the District SVEEP Committee and CEO of the zilla panchayat, announced the decision during a meeting on Thursday. He emphasized that this initiative is part of the Election Commission’s broader campaign to promote voter awareness and literacy. Educational institutions have been instructed to ensure that Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) are active and functional, with a focus on engaging students in various activities.

To encourage participation and spread awareness, ELCs will organize programs such as essay writing, debates, drawing competitions, rangoli events, and street plays, all centered around the importance of voting. Additionally, students will be urged to involve their parents and the community in these efforts, creating a ripple effect of awareness beyond the classroom.

Heads of educational institutions have been tasked with implementing these activities effectively, while officials from the education department will oversee progress at the taluk level. The initiative is expected to not only educate students about their voting rights but also inspire them to actively participate in the democratic process.

This move underscores the district’s commitment to fostering a culture of informed and responsible citizenship among the youth, ensuring that they are well-prepared to exercise their franchise when the time comes.
