Arrest in Pratapgarh attack linked to land dispute over young man

Police in Pratapgarh have arrested a suspect in connection with a deadly attack on a young man, recovering the vehicle and weapon used in the assault that stemmed from a land dispute.

Shahrukh, son of Mobeen, a 25-year-old resident of Shivgarh village under Dilippur police station jurisdiction, was apprehended on Monday following a tip-off. Authorities recovered a red Swift car and a stick used in the attack from his possession. The arrest was made on a dirt road between Khavvahatpur and Dilippur as part of an operation directed by Superintendent of Police Deepak Bhukar.

The incident occurred on August 21 when Mohammad Sadab was traveling on the Rakhha-Khiriwir road near Ganaidih village. According to police, a group of men in a car overtook Sadab's motorcycle, forced him to stop, and launched a brutal assault. The attackers allegedly opened fire, beat him with sticks, hurled abuses, and threatened to kill him. A case was promptly registered at Dilippur police station following the complaint.

During interrogation, Shahrukh reportedly confessed that the attack was premeditated, arising from a land-related dispute. He revealed that the group had planned to waylay Sadab on the road. After overtaking his motorcycle near Ganaidih, they carried out the firing and beating. The assailants fled the scene with the car when a crowd began to gather. Police later recovered the stick from the car's trunk based on the suspect's statement.

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts underway to track down other individuals involved in the attack. The police team that conducted the arrest included Sub-Inspectors Devendra Kumar Pathak and Ashish Kumar, Reserve Constable Shivam Singh, and Constable Jagdish Prasad. The case highlights the dangerous escalation of land disputes in rural areas, where personal conflicts can quickly turn violent.
