From MIT to $60 Billion Deal: Meet Aman Sanger, Cursor’s Indian-Origin Co-Founder

Elon Musk’s SpaceX has announced plans to acquire Anysphere, the company behind the AI-powered coding assistant Cursor, in a landmark deal valued at $60 billion. This acquisition has turned the spotlight on Aman Sanger, one of the co-founders of Anysphere and a rising figure in the artificial intelligence industry. The deal is among the largest ever for an AI software company, reflecting the growing demand for tools that leverage AI to enhance software development.

Cursor, founded in 2022, has quickly become one of the fastest-growing startups in the AI-assisted coding sector, amassing millions of users. Aman Sanger, now 25, co-founded the company alongside Michael Truell, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark during their time as students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Sanger, who was raised in New York, is part of a family with a strong academic and entrepreneurial background.

Sanger’s father, Arvind Sanger, is an alumnus of IIT Bombay and the founder of the investment firm Geosphere Capital, while his mother, Shilpa Sanger, is an orthodontist, entrepreneur, and angel investor. Sanger’s interest in programming began during his teenage years, eventually leading him to study computer science at MIT, where he met his future co-founders.

Before launching Anysphere, Sanger gained valuable experience through internships at major organisations, including Google and Bridgewater Associates. Reports indicate that he was involved in AI-related projects even before founding the company. Anysphere was established in 2022 with the goal of creating practical AI tools.

Initially, the team focused on computer-aided design products but later pivoted to software engineering tools after identifying a larger market opportunity. This shift led to the development of Cursor, an AI-powered code editor designed to help developers write, edit, and understand software more effectively.

Cursor distinguishes itself from traditional coding assistants by offering advanced capabilities such as analysing large codebases, answering project-specific questions, and generating code based on user prompts. Its features have made it popular among both individual developers and enterprise customers seeking to boost productivity. The platform’s rapid growth has been fueled by increasing demand for AI-powered developer tools.

The company has attracted significant funding from prominent investors, achieving multibillion-dollar valuations in successive funding rounds. The proposed $60 billion acquisition by SpaceX underscores the strategic importance of AI-driven coding platforms as businesses increasingly integrate AI into their software development processes.

This milestone also places Aman Sanger among a growing group of Indian-origin entrepreneurs making significant contributions to the global AI landscape. From learning to code as a teenager to co-founding one of the most closely watched startups in the AI industry, Sanger’s journey is a testament to the transformative potential of innovation and entrepreneurship.
