A major accident took place in Mohammadpur village in Shravasti’s Gilola police station area when two villagers helping electricity workers repair a power pole were reportedly electrocuted by an 11 thousand volt high-tension line. Both men suffered serious burn injuries and were first taken to CHC Gilola. They were later referred to Medical College Bahraich, where they died during treatment.
The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Sachin Mishra and 32-year-old Ved Prakash Pathak. Both were helping the electricity employees repair the pole when the accident occurred.
It is being reported that repair work on the electricity pole was under way and that a shutdown of the 11 thousand volt line had been taken from the power house. However, the work had not yet been completed when the electricity supply was allegedly switched on suddenly.
As soon as current began flowing through the line, Sachin Mishra and Ved Prakash Pathak came in contact with it. Both villagers suffered serious burn injuries in the incident.
After the accident, the two men were rushed to CHC Gilola. Considering their critical condition, doctors referred them to Medical College Bahraich. Despite treatment, both died there.
News of the two deaths triggered chaos and grief in the families. There was also panic in Mohammadpur village after the incident.
The accident has raised serious questions about the functioning of those responsible at the Gilola power house and the electricity department’s shutdown arrangements.
The key question now is how the 11 thousand volt supply was switched on before the repair work on the line had been completed, despite the shutdown being taken for the work.
The incident took place while efforts were being made to restore the electricity system in the village. The two villagers were cooperating with the electricity employees during the pole repair work when they were allegedly caught in the live current.
So far, no official statement has been issued by the department on the entire matter. The circumstances in which the supply was restored before the completion of the repair work remain at the centre of the questions being raised after the deaths.
