The Proteas chased down Zimbabwe's modest total of 144 with clinical precision, reaching 145/3 in just 13.4 overs to register their first win of the tournament and maintain a perfect record against Zimbabwe in T20 cricket.

Brevis unleashes devastating knock

Dewald Brevis delivered a match-winning performance, smashing an unbeaten 75 off just 32 deliveries to claim the Player of the Match award. The explosive innings featured more sixes than Zimbabwe managed across their entire batting effort, a statistic that underscored South Africa's dominance.

Brevis reached his fifty in only 24 balls, his second consecutive half-century in the series, though this time with crucial support from his teammates. Jordan Hermann and Lhuan-dre Pretorius laid a strong platform through the Powerplay, allowing Brevis to launch his assault without pressure.

Speaking after the victory, Brevis credited the team's overall improvement across all departments and expressed satisfaction with visible progress in fielding, bowling and batting.

Zimbabwe's middle-order collapse proves costly

Zimbabwe started brightly with Brian Bennett and Ben Curran racing to 54 in the Powerplay, but the innings unraveled dramatically after Bennett's dismissal. South Africa's spinners executed a chokehold, dismantling Zimbabwe's experienced batting core as the innings spiraled from 76/1 to 94/5.

Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl fell during the collapse, leaving Zimbabwe scrambling. Tadiwanashe Marumani provided brief resistance with a brisk 30, but wickets continued to tumble and Zimbabwe limped to 144, finishing what captain Raza admitted was perhaps 15 runs short.

South Africa captain Bjorn Fortuin praised the bowling unit's collective effort, with Duan Jansen claiming three wickets despite being expensive, debutant Eathan Bosch finishing with miserly figures of 1/20, and Fortuin, Maphaka and Subrayen each claiming at least one scalp.

Raza identifies systemic failures

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza did not mince words when reflecting on the defeat, calling it a tough start to the tri-series. He acknowledged the bowling fell short of required standards and pinpointed a fundamental problem: the three departments failed to complement one another.

Raza identified the middle phase as where things unraveled, though he noted the scorecard did not tell the complete story, with several boundaries coming off edges rather than clean strokes. He praised the Powerplay batting and the partnerships between Marumani and Madhevere, as well as Bennett and Curran's opening effort, while crediting the seamers for acquitting themselves well.

Zimbabwe managed just two wickets inside South Africa's Powerplay and could not stem the run flow thereafter, with ordinary lines and lengths compounded by sloppy ground fielding. The tri-series continues Monday with Zimbabwe facing Namibia, with the first ball scheduled for 12 pm GMT.
