In a unique initiative during Pitr Paksha, six plants were planted in Babupatti village of Pratapgarh in memory of the ancestors of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan. The initiative focused on remembering the Bachchan family’s forefathers through plantation rather than through a grand event or public display.
The tradition of remembering ancestors during Pitr Paksha is widely observed. However, in Babupatti, the tribute took a different form. The planting of trees was presented as a way of preserving the memories of the forefathers and remaining connected to one’s roots.
Babupatti is associated with the ancestors of the Bachchan family. During Pitr Paksha, six plants were planted in the village to pay tribute to them. The plantation took place at the library campus built in the village.
Villagers, people associated with the Bachchan family and Nivrutt Yadav, president of the Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan Prabodhan Pratishthan Maharashtra Trust, took part in the plantation drive. The campus is linked to the memories of Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
Tulsi, amla, peepal, banyan and gular were among the different plants planted on the premises. According to the trust president, the plants were planted in memory of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, his wife Teji Bachchan, his father Pratap Narayan Srivastava, his mother Saraswati Devi and other members of the family.
The organisers said this was the first time that such a plantation initiative had been carried out in Babupatti while remembering the ancestors of the Bachchan family. For the villagers, the event was not limited to planting trees. They described it as an emotional effort to reconnect with the village’s historical identity and family roots.
The villagers believe that remembering the Bachchan family’s ancestors during Pitr Paksha in the village connected to their soil carries a special significance. The plantation was therefore seen as a symbolic way of keeping those memories alive through the presence of trees in the village.
At the same time, the initiative also raises a question: can the memories of ancestors be kept alive only through such events, or are concrete steps also needed to protect the village’s historical heritage and landmarks such as the library?
For now, the plantation of six plants has become a tribute to the ancestors. It also carries a message about Babupatti’s heritage and local identity, while encouraging coming generations to remain connected to their roots.
