Saudi Arabia Warns Drivers of SR900 Fines for Illegal Window Tinting
Saudi Arabia's General Traffic Department has issued a warning to motorists, reminding them that violations of the Kingdom's vehicle window tinting regulations could result in fines ranging from SR500 to SR900. This measure is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with traffic laws.
With summer temperatures soaring across the Kingdom, many drivers are opting for darker window films to reduce heat. However, authorities have urged motorists to ensure their tinting adheres to legal limits. While not all forms of window tinting are prohibited, drivers must follow specific rules regarding which windows can be tinted and the required level of transparency.
Under Saudi traffic regulations, certain vehicle windows may be tinted as long as the tint does not obstruct visibility and complies with approved standards. Transparent tinting that allows clear visibility from both inside and outside the vehicle is permitted. However, reflective, decorative, or opaque films that hinder visibility or prevent security personnel from seeing inside the vehicle are strictly prohibited.
Excessively dark tinting remains one of the most common vehicle modification violations across Saudi Arabia. The regulations aim to balance driver comfort during extreme summer conditions with road safety, law enforcement needs, and public security considerations. While side windows may be tinted under approved conditions, stricter restrictions apply to other parts of the vehicle, such as the front windshield, which must remain clear except for authorised upper strips.
Authorities have advised motorists to ensure any tinting work is carried out by reputable providers familiar with Saudi regulations. Traffic officials regularly conduct inspections and enforcement campaigns, particularly during seasonal weather changes when vehicle modifications become more common. Drivers are encouraged to inspect their vehicles and rectify any non-compliant tinting before routine traffic checks.
Clear visibility is deemed essential for safe driving, accident prevention, and effective law enforcement. Excessively dark windows can hinder officers' ability to identify drivers and passengers during security checks and traffic investigations. Compliance with tinting regulations is considered a vital component of maintaining safer roads across the Kingdom.
This latest reminder forms part of broader initiatives by Saudi authorities to strengthen road safety, including stricter enforcement of seatbelt regulations, speed limits, and vehicle inspection requirements.
