Rajkumar Hirani Reveals Plot of 3 Idiots Sequel: Rancho, Farhan, and Raju Grapple with Mid-Life Crisis
Director Rajkumar Hirani has unveiled new details about the highly anticipated sequel to *3 Idiots*, the 2009 blockbuster that became a cultural phenomenon. The sequel will revisit the lives of Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, now 15-20 years older, as they navigate the complexities of mid-life crises.
In an interview with *The Hollywood Reporter India*, Hirani confirmed that he and longtime collaborator Abhijat Joshi are still in the process of developing the script. He revealed that the storyline will explore what happens to the beloved characters after their college days, focusing on their lives as married individuals with children. “They are experiencing mid-life crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?” Hirani said.
The original film, which critiqued India’s education system and encouraged audiences to pursue their passions over societal expectations, left an indelible mark on viewers. Its iconic phrase, “All is well,” remains one of Hindi cinema’s most memorable catchphrases.
Aamir Khan, who played the role of Rancho (Phunsukh Wangdu) in the original, confirmed earlier this year that the sequel is in the works. Speaking to *Amar Ujala*, Khan shared that he had heard the narration and found the story “very good,” noting that it retains the humor and uniqueness of the first film. While the script is still being finalized, Khan expressed excitement about reprising his role, calling the story “beautiful.”
The sequel is expected to bring back the original cast, including Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan. However, it remains unclear whether other fan-favorite characters, such as Omi Vaidya’s Chatur and Boman Irani’s Viru Sahastrabuddhe, will return.
Released in 2009, *3 Idiots* was a satirical coming-of-age comedy-drama directed by Hirani and co-written with Joshi. The film emerged as one of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbusters, grossing Rs 400.61 crore worldwide on a reported budget of Rs 55 crore. It also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
While fans eagerly await the sequel, Hirani is also working on his streaming debut as the showrunner for *Pritam & Pedro*, a JioHotstar series centered on cybercrime policing.
