Passenger steamer with 58 people rescued after breakdown on Chambal River

A major incident unfolded on the Chambal River near Agra when a passenger steamer carrying 58 people broke down midstream due to running out of diesel. The steamer, en route from Uttar Pradesh to Madhya Pradesh, was left adrift in the river’s strong currents, causing panic among passengers. The passengers, who had been gripped by fear for hours, were safely evacuated by the Bhind administration. District Collector of Bhind, Kirori Lal Meena, confirmed the rescue and assured that all individuals were safely sent back to their homes. The steamer had departed from the Kanjar Ghat in Agra, where motorboat services were introduced earlier this year following the removal of a pontoon bridge. Reports suggest that motorboat operations in the area had previously faced scrutiny, with unapproved services being halted in July.

In the aftermath of the incident, operations at Pinahat Ghat have been suspended. Authorities are facing criticism for failing to ensure basic safety measures, such as adequate fuel supply and emergency equipment like life jackets. The Agra administration, along with transport and navigation officials, is under pressure to explain the lapse and implement stricter oversight to prevent future mishaps.
