Sri Lanka's Pasindu Sooriyabandara Shows Poise in Colombo Test Resistance

Pasindu Sooriyabandara delivered a composed 80 off 133 balls to anchor Sri Lanka's batting resistance on Day 3 of the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club, displaying the kind of nerve that eluded him in Galle.

The right-hander, described as a bundle of nervous energy during the second innings at Galle, was all poise and conviction in Colombo, recording a staggering control percentage of 93.3 as he helped Sri Lanka push back against India's relatively inexperienced bowling attack. His innings formed part of a collective effort that saw the hosts string together crucial partnerships of 123, 137 and 92 balls, frustrating Indian captain Shubman Gill's rotation of bowlers.

Day 3 Defiance Builds on Dinusha Partnership

Sooriyabandara found an able ally in Sonal Dinusha, whose unorthodox approach provided a contrasting but equally effective method of survival. While Dinusha swept, reverse-swept and slog-swept his way to 106 runs from that shot type alone in the series, Sooriyabandara relied on conventional batting technique and judgment. Together, they ensured that India's bowlers, despite trying different angles and employing Sarfaraz Khan's close-in banter, could not break through as decisively as they had hoped.

The day ended prematurely at 4:58 PM when thick dark clouds and rain forced the players to rush off the field, with Gill holding a shiny new ball used for just 2.4 overs but unable to deploy pace bowler Prasidh Krishna due to poor light. India had picked six wickets and restricted Sri Lanka to a scoring rate of 3.18 in an 80-over day, but the prospect of enforcing the follow-on remained just within reach.

Follow-On Battle Continues

By Day 4, Sooriyabandara was back at the crease after India enforced the follow-on, reaching 35 not out alongside Kamindu Mendis as Sri Lanka limped to 83/2 at lunch, still trailing by 130 runs. The hosts had been bowled out for 290 in their first innings, falling just 13 runs short of avoiding the follow-on after Dinusha's maiden Test century.

India had struck early in the second innings, with Lahiru Udara dismissed for a careless 3 and Kamil Mishara falling leg-before to Ravindra Jadeja for 32 after getting set. Sooriyabandara's continued presence at the crease offered Sri Lanka hope of avoiding an innings defeat, though the tourists remained firmly in control of the match.

His performance underscored the learning curve this young Sri Lankan batting line-up has shown across the series, pushing back with defiance stretched across sessions even as India's bowlers channelled all the discipline they could muster. As Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel noted to his charges after Day 3, it was a proper day of Test cricket where scripts occasionally get ripped apart.
