A grand Kanya Pujan and Kanya Bhoj ceremony was organised at the residence of social worker Deepa Varshney in Hayat Nagar locality of Sambhal on the auspicious occasion of Mahanavami during Sharadiya Navratri. The ceremony was held as Kanya Pujan was being observed across Sambhal.

The house had an atmosphere of celebration from the morning. It was decorated with flower garlands and rangoli for the occasion. At 11:43 am, during the Abhijit Muhurat, nine young girls were invited into the house with great respect.

The girls’ feet were washed first. They were then given a tilak of roli and sandalwood, and a mauli was tied around their wrists. After this, all the girls were seated on आसन and served halwa, puri, chana and kheer as prasad with affection.

After the worship, the girls were given chunris, make-up items and dakshina before they were seen off. Deepa Varshney and the family members also sought their blessings.

Speaking on the occasion, social worker Deepa Varshney said, “Kanya Pujan has special importance during Navratri. It is said in the scriptures that the living form of the Goddess resides in girls between the ages of 2 and 10 years. They are worshipped as the nine forms of Navdurga. Kanya Pujan is not merely a tradition, but also a symbol of respect for women’s power. Performing Kanya Pujan on this day ensures happiness, prosperity and the continued blessings of Maa Durga in the home.”

She further said that today’s younger generation should carry this Sanatan tradition forward, as this is the real identity of the culture.

The ceremony also created an atmosphere of happiness in the locality. Women from nearby homes helped with the worship, while all members of the family took an active part in serving the girls.

According to the report, a special occasion for Kanya Pujan was created this time because Ashtami and Navami of Sharadiya Navratri fell on the same day. The Panchang states that the main day for Kanya Pujan was on 19 October.

The report was filed by Rajat Malhotra.
