Migrant worker couple from Madhya Pradesh drowns in Kerala tea plantation pond

A migrant worker couple from Madhya Pradesh drowned in a pond located inside a tea plantation at Pooppara, under the Santhanpara police station limits. Police have identified the deceased as Lahan Sing Markam, 30, and his wife Sunitha Markam, 30.

Local residents had last seen the couple walking toward their rented home on Sunday evening. The woman's body was discovered floating in the pond around noon the following day.

Recovery operation and police theory

Alerted by local residents, police reached the site and undertook efforts to drain the pond. The man's body was subsequently recovered from the water.

Investigating officers suspect that one of them accidentally fell into the pond, and the other drowned while attempting a rescue. The couple had recently arrived in Pooppara in search of work and were living in a rented house situated in the plantation valley.

The bodies have been shifted to the Idukki Government Medical College for post-mortem examinations. Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
