Political confrontation in Bihar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is set to intensify today, as opposition parties hold an Aakrosh March at the block level across the state on 7 October.
The march is being organised by the Mahagathbandhan following an announcement by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. Opposition parties are taking their protest against the SIR process to the streets in Bihar’s blocks.
The Mahagathbandhan has questioned the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in the SIR process. It is also demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The issue has led to a continuing escalation in statements and counter-statements between the ruling side and the opposition in Bihar. The opposition is using the march to press its objections to the voter-list revision and its demand concerning the Election Commission.
In view of today’s protests, administrative-level monitoring may also be increased in several districts. The march is expected to bring the dispute over the SIR process into sharper focus across Bihar’s local administrative areas.
