Kanika Maheshwari clarifies divorce rumors: "We took a step back"
Kanika Maheshwari clarifies divorce speculations, stating she and Ankur Ghai reconsidered filing for divorce. Read more about her relationship insights.
Kanika Maheshwari, currently seen in a pivotal role in Sehar Hone Ko Hai, has addressed long-standing rumours about her marital status. In an exclusive interview with Times of India TV, the actress, best known for her role in Diya Aur Baati Hum, broke her silence on speculation surrounding her relationship with husband Ankur Ghai.
Kanika revealed that while there was a phase when she and Ankur had decided to file for divorce, they ultimately chose to reconsider. "After about three years of continuous rumours and speculation, it felt right to finally address it. Many reports and discussions on social media were doing the rounds that Ankur and I are divorced, but this is not true," she clarified.
The actress explained that although they had once initiated divorce proceedings, they decided against it. "We are not divorced. The thing is, a lot of people tend to spread wrong information without knowing the full story," she said, adding that various inaccurate narratives about their lives and relationship had circulated widely.
Kanika emphasized the importance of understanding the context behind people's lives before forming judgments. "It is too easy to talk about someone else's life without understanding their reality. Most of what we see on social media is only a small part of a person's life," she noted.
Addressing the fact that she and Ankur live in separate cities, Kanika explained that this arrangement is purely due to professional commitments. "Ankur lives in Delhi where his work is based, and I am in Mumbai for my work and shootings. The fact that we are living in two different cities is because of our professional lives and not because we are divorced," she clarified.
Kanika expressed frustration over the assumptions people make about her personal life. "What truly bothers me is when individuals talk about someone's relationship with so much confidence without being well-informed. A marriage is never just for showing off; it is like any other relationship—whether between friends, family, or lovers," she said.
Reflecting on the challenges of being a public figure, Kanika shared that constant speculation can be uncomfortable. "Unfortunately, when you're a public figure, people try to cook up stories about your personal life. After three years of hearing so much, I think it was time to clear the air," she said. Despite the rumours, Kanika affirmed that she and Ankur remain respectful and fond of each other while pursuing their separate careers.
The couple is also co-parenting their son, Reyansh. "Some days he lives with his papa in Delhi, and on other days, he is with me in Mumbai," Kanika said. She revealed that their decision to stay married was influenced by their mutual desire to avoid any negative impact on their child. "The main reason we did not get divorced was because Ankur did not want to, and then I also changed my mind. Now, we are happily living in a long-distance marriage, and it is the purest form of love," she concluded.
