Jurel's composed 95 steadies India in Colombo Test fightback

Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 95, steering India to 475 for eight at an early tea on day two as rain interrupted play in the second Test against Sri Lanka at the SSC in Colombo on Monday.

The wicketkeeper-batter's composed innings proved crucial after India resumed the second day at 300 for 5, demonstrating remarkable resilience against a probing Sri Lankan attack on a hot and humid day.

Morning setback and Pant's brave stand

India's progress hit an immediate stumbling block when debutant Saransh Jain departed for six, dismissed by Asitha Fernando with the score at 307 for six. The situation appeared precarious, particularly when Rishabh Pant walked in carrying concerns about his fitness after retiring hurt on three the previous evening following a blow to his forearm from Lahiru Kumara.

Pant, however, allayed doubts during a near two-hour stay that yielded 63 runs. The left-hander faced a relentless bouncer barrage from Fernando and Kumara, even taking another blow to his shoulder, but displayed equal measure with his bat and resilience. He reached his fifty in 81 balls with a pulled four off Keshara Nuwantha, having earlier punished the off-spinner for consecutive boundaries. His dismissal came immediately after the resumption of the middle session when he uppishly drove Nuwantha to Lahiru Udara, ending a vital 112-run sixth-wicket partnership with Jurel.

Jurel finds form at crucial juncture

Jurel's unbeaten 95 will please the team management considerably, marking his second fifty in as many Tests after enduring eight innings without a 50-plus score prior to the first Test in Galle. He reached his half-century in 97 balls, batting with solidity despite one anxious moment when Prabath Jayasuriya appealed loudly for leg-before after an arm ball beat his outstretched bat.

At stumps on day one, Jurel was on four alongside Jain, with Devdutt Padikkal and Ravindra Jadeja's earlier contributions having pushed India to 300 for 5. Padikkal had struck 117 in a hard-fought knock, building a 120-run stand with Shubman Gill and a 74-run partnership with Jadeja before falling to Nuwantha's quicker delivery that straightened and crashed into off stump.

Lower-order resistance extends India's advantage

Jurel found another determined partner in Manav Suthar, who contributed 18 runs in a 54-run eighth-wicket stand before Jayasuriya induced a thick edge to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella. Mohammed Siraj was yet to open his account when rain forced an early tea.

India's first-day total of 300 for 5 had come on what is considered the best batting surface at the SSC, with the pitch expected to favour batsmen for the first two to three days before spin becomes more prominent as it dries out. Gill had little doubt in winning the toss and electing to bat, a decision his counterpart Dhananjaya de Silva would have mirrored.

Asitha Fernando proved the most effective Sri Lankan bowler on day one with figures of 3 for 46, while Kumara and Nuwantha claimed one wicket each. Despite toiling in the oppressive conditions, Sri Lanka's bowlers kept fighting, using seven bowlers in rotation as the hosts attempted to contain India's progress.
