According to police, the joint team was checking vehicles at Kilhauda border in the Bhojpur police station area following information from an informer. A motorcycle rider approached from the Hapur side. Officers signalled him to stop, but he allegedly turned the motorcycle around and tried to flee instead. Police said the motorcycle then slipped and fell during the attempted escape.

Police alleged that the rider subsequently fired at the team with the intention of killing its members. Officers said they returned fire in self-defence, and the suspect sustained a bullet injury to his leg during that action. He was then apprehended and taken for medical treatment. This account of the sequence of events is the version provided by police.
