Ganga river water level in Varanasi drops after two stable days

The water level of the Ganga river in Varanasi has started to recede after remaining stable for two days. On Thursday, the river’s level dropped by 5 centimeters, bringing it down to 63.56 meters. Experts attribute this decline to reduced rainfall intensity in the mountainous regions upstream.

Since late July, the Ganga’s water level had been rising steadily, with heavy rainfall in early August in the hilly areas causing a significant surge. On Monday, the river’s level was recorded at 63.78 meters. While the level remained stable on Tuesday, it fell by 17 centimeters on Wednesday, followed by another 5-centimeter drop on Thursday.

Despite the decrease, several ghats in Varanasi have yet to return to normal conditions. Water still inundates some lower areas and small temples located near the riverbanks. Local authorities have indicated that the water level could drop further in the coming days if rainfall continues to be sparse. Conversely, increased rainfall could lead to a reversal of the current trend.

The situation is being closely monitored, as the fluctuating water levels impact both daily life and religious activities in the city. Residents and visitors are advised to remain cautious near the riverbanks as conditions evolve.
