Ganga river crosses warning level in Varanasi as flood relief camps shelter hundreds

The water level of the Ganga river in Varanasi has risen continuously to reach 70.29 metres, crossing the warning mark of 70.26 metres. The level remains below the danger mark of 71.26 metres, but the district administration has stepped up relief and rescue operations while maintaining full alertness.

Around 11 neighbourhoods and wards in the district have been affected due to the rising water level of the Varuna river, according to the administration. A total of 1,388 people from 328 families in these areas have been caught in the flood. Keeping the safety and comfort of affected people in mind, 13 relief camps are being operated in the district, where 935 people from 219 families are staying.

People in the relief camps are being provided nutritious food three times a day, breakfast, clean drinking water, bedding, lighting arrangements, sanitation and medical facilities. Special arrangements have also been made for milk, fruits and other essential items for children, women and the elderly. The administration said sufficient ration kits have been provided for the affected families.

Thirty-two boats have been deployed to deliver relief material to flood-affected areas and to keep movement of people smooth. The water levels of the Ganga and Varuna rivers are being monitored continuously and sensitive areas are being regularly inspected by senior officers.

The district administration has established coordination with the police, health department, municipal corporation, water police, NDRF and other related departments to keep watch on the situation. Officers have been instructed that in case the water level rises further, affected people should be immediately shifted to safe locations and relief and rescue operations should be intensified.

The district administration has appealed to citizens not to pay attention to rumours, follow the guidelines issued by the administration and immediately contact the helpline or concerned officers in any emergency situation.
