Effigies of former MP Rajaram Pal burned in Kanpur, protests erupt

Protests erupted in Kanpur Dehat district on Monday after effigies of former MP and minister Rajaram Pal were allegedly burned at two separate locations, sparking outrage among Pal community organizations and Bahujan groups. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Pal Mahasabha and Bharatiya Dalit Panthers, along with other affiliated bodies, staged a demonstration march to the District Magistrate's office demanding immediate action against those responsible.

The controversy centers on alleged incidents in Akbarpur and Maitha where protesters reportedly burned effigies of Rajaram Pal following the circulation of a controversial video linked to the former parliamentarian. Demonstrators claim that casteist slurs were used during these protests, which they say were conducted in an objectionable manner near Akbarpur bridge and Maitha tehsil.

The protest march began at Eco Park near Maati intersection and culminated at the DM's office, where activists submitted a memorandum to officials. They demanded an impartial investigation into both incidents, identification of accused persons through video footage analysis, registration of FIRs, and strict legal action. The organizations have given the administration a 48-hour ultimatum, warning of intensified agitation through democratic and constitutional means if their demands are not met.

The demonstration caused significant traffic disruption on the main road, with school buses and even ambulances stuck for considerable periods as protesters blocked the route. Administrative officials worked to restore normal traffic flow during the standoff.

Community leaders assert that if the allegations are proven true, the incidents represent not merely an insult to one individual but a deliberate attempt to hurt the sentiments of the entire Pal and Bahujan communities. The administration now faces pressure to conduct a thorough probe based on video evidence and take appropriate action within the stipulated timeframe to prevent further escalation of tensions in the district.
