Crocodile spotted near village pond in Kanpur sparks safety fears

A crocodile sighting in a pond near Behmei village in Kanpur Dehat district's Rajpur block has sparked widespread panic among local residents. The reptile was spotted on Monday at a pond on the outskirts of the village, prompting scores of villagers to gather at the site. The crocodile retreated into the pond as the crowd swelled, but its presence in a water body so close to human habitation has left the community deeply anxious.

Local resident Babu Ji Singh told reporters that the crocodile has been seen moving around the pond area for several days now. The situation has become so alarming that cattle owners have stopped taking their animals to the pond for fear of an attack. Villagers say the crocodile has been appearing near the pond continuously for about a week, creating a climate of fear in the area.

The pond serves as an important water source for the village, and its proximity to residential areas has raised serious safety concerns. With daily routines disrupted and livestock unable to access water, residents are demanding immediate action from authorities. The villagers have informed forest department officials and called for the crocodile to be captured and relocated as soon as possible.

Responding to the complaints, Bhognipur Forest Range Officer Sarvesh Bhadauria confirmed that a forest department team is being dispatched to the location. The team will assess the situation and determine the best course of action to safely capture the crocodile and restore normalcy to the village. Until then, residents have been advised to maintain a safe distance from the pond and exercise extreme caution when moving around the area. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of human-wildlife conflict in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh.
