Chandausi honours Second Lieutenant Girish Chandra, 1965 war martyr

A solemn remembrance ceremony was held at Shaheed Park in Chandausi to honour the sacrifice of Second Lieutenant Girish Chandra, a local war hero who laid down his life for the nation during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. The event took place on Sunday, September 20, observed as Balidan Diwas, or Martyrs' Day.

Poet Madhav Mishra lit the ceremonial lamp at the memorial, and gathered citizens paid floral tributes before the statue of the fallen soldier, honouring his supreme sacrifice with reverence.

Girish Chandra was born on January 16, 1940, in Chandausi. His father, Satish Chandra Aggarwal, served as secretary in the municipal board. The young Girish Chandra studied at SM College, where he earned recognition as a talented hockey player. After graduation, he joined the State Bank in a secure job, but his heart belonged to the service of Hindustan.

Driven by patriotism, Girish Chandra left his banking career to enlist in the Indian Army. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and devoted himself to defending the nation. During the 1965 war with Pakistan, he fought with valour, bringing glory to the country and pride to Chandausi, making the town's name known across the world.

Vijay Prakash Aggarwal, son of the martyr, attended the ceremony, along with Suresh Chand Sharma, who has played a key role in the memorial committee. Speaking at the event, a cousin of Girish Chandra expressed immense pride in the family's legacy, noting that the martyrdom has elevated the honour of the entire family. The speakers vowed that Chandausi will never forget the sacrifice of this brave son of the soil.
