BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh dies after cancer battle

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Uma Shankar Singh passed away on Friday at Fortis Hospital in Delhi after battling cancer for a prolonged period. Singh, who represented the Rasra constituency in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, was BSP's sole MLA in the current Uttar Pradesh Assembly. His demise has left the party and his supporters in deep mourning.

Singh had been unwell for a long time and was unable to participate in recent legislative sessions or BSP meetings due to his health condition. Known for his close association with BSP chief Mayawati, Singh was considered one of the prominent leaders in eastern Uttar Pradesh. His contributions to social service earned him widespread recognition, with many referring to him as a "messiah of the poor."

In 2016, Singh organized a mass wedding for 351 couples, including both Hindus and Muslims, which garnered significant attention and praise for promoting communal harmony. His victory in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from Rasra was a rare success for the BSP, as he secured the party’s only seat in the state legislature, effectively saving its presence in the Assembly.

Singh’s death has sent shockwaves through the BSP and his constituency. Leaders and supporters have expressed their condolences, highlighting his dedication to public service and his role in strengthening the party in the region. His passing marks the end of an era for the BSP in Uttar Pradesh, leaving a void in the party’s leadership in the state.
