Fernandes hat-trick powers United comeback in five-goal thriller

Bruno Fernandes followed up his double footballer of the year awards with a sensational hat-trick as Manchester United overturned an early deficit to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Portuguese captain delivered a commanding performance that began with a thunderous left-footed equaliser just before half-time and concluded with two calm second-half finishes, nearly adding a spectacular fourth from the halfway line.

Ipswich strike first before momentum shifts

Ipswich arrived with clear attacking intent and took a 29th-minute lead through Leif Davis, whose precise execution caught United's defence exposed. The visitors' pace troubled the home side throughout the opening period, with Abdul Fatawu skinning Luke Shaw close to the touchline before Ipswich capitalised, whilst Julio Enciso posed a constant threat with his direct running.

The contest pivoted on a critical error by Marcelino Núñez, whose disastrous slip at the wrong moment allowed United to counter as the break neared. Fernandes seized the opportunity, rifling in a left-foot bullet to level the scores and shift momentum decisively in United's favour.

Second-half demolition

United transformed the match in a devastating 12-minute spell between the 56th and 68th minutes, scoring three times to put the game beyond doubt. Jacob Greaves deflected the ball into his own net for United's second, though Harry Maguire got lucky with the deflection that might otherwise have seen his 'goal' ruled out.

Fernandes then converted a penalty with composure after two pre-season failures before completing his hat-trick with a calm third finish. Bryan Mbeumo, who had earlier hit the bar from close range when Marcus Rashford's cross was deflected, capped the rout with United's fifth.

Rashford returns as United respond

The victory provided emphatic vindication for manager Michael Carrick, who had insisted the pathetic 2-0 defeat to Hull was "just one game". Marcus Rashford made his first league start since December 2024, getting on the ball frequently and running at Ipswich's defence whilst almost creating a goal for Mbeumo.

Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen produced a superb save to deny Diogo Dalot early on and made a crucial touch to prevent Mbeumo an easy finish, though he had no chance with Fernandes' equaliser. Chuka Akpom grabbed a late consolation for the visitors following sloppy defending from Lisandro Martínez, who made a mistake that allowed Enciso to set up the substitute.

The result demonstrated that when Fernandes shines, United typically follow, with the captain's stellar form from last season showing no signs of fading.
