Tension and anger have grown in Shravasti after the death of Kamlesh, a Dalit youth, in the Giloula police station area, with family members and villagers accusing the police of negligence and of not giving correct information about the entire sequence of events.

The case took a new turn after an FIR was registered on the complaint of the family. On Tuesday night, the police and administration had said that Kamlesh had jumped from a vehicle. However, on Wednesday, after a complaint by the family, an FIR was lodged against seven people under various sections, including murder. This has intensified questions around the circumstances in which Kamlesh died and the role of those involved in the incident.

Action has also been taken against officials in connection with the case. Kanungo Santosh Kumar Tiwari and Lekhpal Dinesh Patel have been suspended. Station in-charge Ashish Verma, Sub-Inspector Indradev Patel and Constable Parvinder Kumar have been sent to the police lines. The responsibility of Giloula police station has now been handed over to Inspector Rajesh Kumar Gupta.

Late at night, Kamlesh’s body was handed over to his family members. After the post-mortem, the body had been kept in the mortuary. Preparations for the last rites are being made after his elder son Sanjay reached from Mumbai.

In view of the tension in the village after the incident, police from five police stations have been deployed. The matter has also triggered local political activity, with public representatives and local leaders becoming active. Amid this, demands are being raised for an impartial investigation and for fixing responsibility in the case.

According to the police, a case has been registered against seven people on the complaint of the deceased’s brother, and an investigation is underway. The investigation is now expected to clarify the circumstances in which Kamlesh died and what role each person had in the sequence of events.
