Bahraich administration cracks down on black market sugar traders amid price concerns

The Bahraich district administration has launched a major crackdown on black market sugar traders as part of the government's broader effort to control rising prices. District Cane Officer Anand Kumar Shukla led an inspection team to the IPL sugar mill located on Jarwal Road, where officials conducted a thorough examination of the facility's sugar stock.

During the surprise inspection, authorities scrutinized approximately 90,000 quintals of sugar stored at the mill. The move comes amid growing concerns over hoarding and profiteering in essential commodities, which have contributed to inflationary pressures affecting common households across the region. Officials are checking whether the mill has been following proper storage and distribution protocols or engaging in practices that artificially restrict supply to drive up market prices.

The government has signaled that such inspections will continue as part of a zero-tolerance approach toward black marketing and illegal hoarding of essential goods. District Cane Officer Shukla emphasized that any violations discovered during these checks will result in strict action against the offenders, with penalties ranging from heavy fines to potential criminal prosecution under existing anti-hoarding laws.

Sugar prices have been a sensitive issue across Uttar Pradesh in recent months, with consumers bearing the brunt of supply chain disruptions and alleged manipulation by middlemen. By targeting large storage facilities and mills directly, the administration aims to ensure that sugar reaches retail markets at fair prices without artificial scarcity created by unscrupulous traders.
