The Andhra Pradesh Health Department has decided to terminate 43 Civil Assistant Surgeons from service due to their prolonged absence from duty. Announcing the decision on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav revealed that some of these doctors had been absent for nearly four years and had failed to respond to show-cause notices issued to them. This marks the second instance in just over a month where the state government has taken action against absentee doctors.

In May, the government had removed 51 doctors working in teaching hospitals for similar reasons. According to the Minister, a total of 118 doctors were found to be absent from duty. Following the issuance of show-cause notices, only nine of them resumed work. Of the remaining, 43 have now been dismissed, while 34 others submitted their resignations. The government is in the process of accepting some of these resignations.

Additionally, 19 doctors cited personal reasons for their inability to attend duty, and their explanations are under review. The cases of 13 other doctors are also being examined. To ensure due process, the government has appointed 11 officers to conduct inquiries under the Andhra Pradesh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1991. Explanations will be sought from the concerned doctors, and further action will be based on the findings of the inquiry reports, said K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, Director of Secondary Health.
