Habbey Teron to Be BJP Candidate for Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Guwahati: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Habbey Teron has been announced as the party's candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Dr. Teron, a medical professional by training, is the BJP MLA representing the Amri (ST) Hills constituency in West Karbi Anglong district.

He is also the first elected representative from the newly created Amri constituency. In a post on X, Chief Minister Sarma stated, "Dr.

Habbey Teron represents the aspirations of our tribal communities and will further strengthen the voice of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao in the legislative process. I extend my best wishes to Dr.

Teron." The Deputy Speaker election comes ahead of the Assam Assembly's Budget session, which is set to begin on July 6. The BJP, which secured 82 seats in the 126-member house during the 2026 elections, leads the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam.

The NDA returned to power for a third consecutive term with a total of 102 seats, including 10 each from alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front.

Earlier, veteran BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass was elected Speaker during the first session of the 16th Assembly in May.
