Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is at the center of controversy after a video showing him throwing half-eaten apples at supporters went viral. The incident occurred on June 7 during a party program in Bengaluru South's Horahalli village. Supporters had welcomed Shivakumar with two large garlands made of apples, which were placed on crash machines. Standing on an open-roof vehicle, Shivakumar took apples from the garlands, ate parts of them, and threw the remaining pieces towards the crowd. The video shows people in the crowd scrambling to catch the apples.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shared the video on social media platform X, criticizing Shivakumar's actions. The BJP stated, "Throwing half-eaten apples at the very people whose votes brought you to power is no joke. This reflects Congress's mindset." The post further emphasized that respect is demonstrated through behavior, not words, and that the public demands respect, not charity. BJP warned that arrogance in place of respect could lead to public backlash.
Separately, another development in Karnataka politics saw Minister Ramalinga Reddy resign from the Shivakumar-led cabinet three days ago. Reddy expressed dissatisfaction over not receiving his preferred department, Bengaluru Development, and was instead assigned the Water Resources Department. CM Shivakumar commented that the matter would be resolved and assured there was no cause for concern.
