BRICS Agriculture Ministers Meet in Indore, Focus on Small Farmers

The BRICS Agriculture Ministers' conference began on June 12, 2026, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighting India's agricultural achievements and global cooperation efforts. The two-day event aims to strengthen collaboration among BRICS nations on sustainable agriculture and food security.

Addressing the inaugural session, Shri Chouhan emphasized India's commitment to empowering small and marginal farmers, who constitute 87% of the country's farming community. He noted that India's agriculture sector has achieved an annual growth rate of 4.5%, with foodgrain production reaching 376 million tonnes. He also highlighted the role of women and youth in driving agricultural transformation through initiatives like Self-Help Groups and agri-tech startups.

Shri Chouhan stressed the importance of natural farming and reducing chemical fertilizer use to ensure long-term sustainability. He mentioned the 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan,' a campaign promoting organic farming practices, and called for greater technological integration in agriculture to address global challenges.

The minister urged BRICS nations to collaborate on empowering small farmers and enhancing food security. He expressed confidence that the conference would foster partnerships through knowledge exchange and policy dialogue, contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural future.

The event also showcased India's cultural ethos, with Shri Chouhan reiterating the spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family) and extending a warm welcome to international delegates.
